Sailing the main channel at Bodega Bay
with easterlies and a low tide

Looking across to the restaurants from Spud Point, waiting for the tide to go out. It's blowing 13-19 at the van so I know it's well over 20 out in the channel.

I pass the time by going to Bodega Head and watching the waves. It's amazing how dinky these waves look in this photo. When this wave broke there was a huge "boom". People actually turned around to see what it was. The waves were 15+ feet high when they broke.

Time to hit the water. Only as soon as I picked up my gear, the wind dropped to about 5 mph. So I had to rig the 9.5. Then when I was done, the wind came up again.

Here I am zipping down the channel trying to take pictures while hanging on to a very overpowered sail. Looks like I'm stationary, doesn't it?
The messy wake of the 95 centimeter wide Kenetic. Looks like a motor boat!

Taking a break. Look at that endless run of smooth water. And I'm already more than half way down the channel.

Looking north. The flat water runs as far as the eye can see.

Heading down the middle of the channel, looking towards Spud Point. This is the spot where the peregrine falcon was diving on all the shore birds and ducks in the channel.

Another "where I've been" shot. Notice the swervy wake in the distance. Hard to go straight while you are looking behind you and through a view finder.

But conditions like this are very rare so I wanted to document it. Now all I need is a waterproof digital camera.
