This
is the launch bowl. It faces northwest and is 180 feet above
the beach.
Once
you get 150 feet or higher here, you can fly to the right out of
the picture and on to the better ridge down south.

 |
Looking
down on launch after coming back high from down south.
I'm
about 600 over launch here. You can see my shadow.
|
 |
A
shot of Brian in his kingposted Sensor.
I
took this shot at about 10:15 in the morning, unusually early for
Goat Rock. We are over the big south bowl down south.
|
 |
Looking
north back towards the launch bowl and the mouth of the Russian
River.
I'm
just beginning to climb out here after leaving the launch bowl and
flying down to the south end.
|
 |
Looking
east over the back at the Russian River. Directly below my
wingtip is a nice looking ridge sloping up from the left.
That's
Willow Creek, my "always soarable" RC site.
|
 |
The
north side of Window Rock. A fun thing to do is to get high
and fly around this rock.
When
you make the turn, all the pelicans and other birds sitting on it
take off.
|
 |
Early
in the flight when it was light, Brian was getting a better sink
rate in his bigger Sensor 160.
When
it picked up to where I could hover, I was above him in my topless
Sensor 150.
|
 |
Looking
south from over the south bowl.
The
pointy spits of land as you move away are Duncan's Landing, Bodega
Head and finally, Tomales Bay and Point Reyes.
|
 |
Looking
straight down at the south bowl. Aside from working the rotor
behind Goat Rock, this spot produces the most lift.
A
pair of redtail hawks have lived here for years.
|
 |
Brian passing
underneath me. I was a little slow on the shutter here.
You can see
the shadow of the fin on his harness. We are at about 800
feet here.
|
 |
The south side
of Window Rock.
This is a tougher
shot to get because you have to get pretty high and then penetrate
upwind and out over the water quite a ways.
|
 |
Brian doing
turns for me while we wait for it to pick up.
Above his right
tip and below his left tip are two RC launch spots.
|
 |
Straight out
from the south bowl looking north.
This gives you
a good layout of the ridge. The town in the background is
Jenner.
|
 |
Heading back
to launch after getting high down south.
The rotor from
Goat Rock (left in the picture) and the venturi between it and launch
can make the return a chore. Can you see Brian over the water?
|
 |
Having fun placing
my shadow between the two cars on the bend in the road.
By this time
it was getting stronger and I was able to fly backwards.
