Reefing the Pirateer Main Sail

To start reefing the main, uphaul the sail until the new, shiny ring at the front of the sail is about a foot above the boom. Click on the photo to see a close up. Put the cunningham line through this new ring and loosely cleat it on the other side of the mast.

Next, attach the stainless steel clip with the white line on it to the shiny ring on the other end of the sail. Run the white line through the pulley on the end of the boom, pull it tight and cleat it as shown in the photo.

At this point the sail should look like this. Notice how the sail is pulled nice and tight just above the boom. Also notice all the extra sail hanging down below the boom. Now let's take care of all this extra sail.

First, let's give these rings (grommets) some numbers. There's 4 of them so starting at the front of the sail we have #1, 2, 3 and 4. Take one of the very short bungies and starting at the back of the sail, roll the sail up and clip the bungie through grommet #3 near the rear third of the sail.

Next, keep moving forward along the sail towards the mast using the bungies to keep the sail rolled up. Here's a close up of the new cunningham grommet (#1) and the bungie that keeps the front of the sail nicely rolled up.

Last of all, take the longer red and green bungie and attach one end to the #3 grommet in the left hand side of the photo. Take the other end and wrap it under the sail, up and through the silver clip on the white line and then clip the bungie back on itself. This cradles the end of the sail.

Here's how the sail should look when you have all the bungies on. But wait, you are not done yet. Look at that unsightly wrinkle! We can't go on the water with the sail looking like this.

To take the wrinkle out, go to the cunningham and pull the line tighter until the wrinkle disappears. When it disappears, cleat the cunningham line. Now you are done and ready go sailing in some serious wind.

Here's how the main sail looks with the reef in it. Putting the reef in the main reduces the size of the sail by 18 square feet.

Here's how the main looks when fully rigged without the reef. Reefing the main not only reduces the sail size but moves the sail down the mast. This reduces the leverage that the gusts have in pushing the top of the mast over. This means less heeling... and fewer screams of terror.
